Ryusei Date, un diciottenne di Tokyo appassionato di mecha, per pagare le spese ospedaliere di sua madre decide di partecipare al torneo nazionale di Burning PT, un videogame i cui giocatori combattono pilotando robot in un ambiente di realtà virtuale. Ma la notte della finale, poco dopo la conclusione della competizione, un improvviso attacco alieno devasta Tokyo. Mentre Ryusei cerca di salvare una sua amica d'infanzia bloccata sotto le macerie, un furgone militare porta di fronte a lui un robot dai comandi identici a quelli di Burning PT. Il gioco infatti è parte di un programma segreto della Federazione Terrestre per trovare potenziali piloti e Ryusei, grazie ai suoi ottimi risultati, è stato selezionato come uno dei candidati più promettenti.
